Independent developer postmortem · July 2024 to September 2026
Over 2 Years of Sales Data From a $2.99 Premium Mobile Game
Sales, discounts, revenue, retention, media exposure, and what I learned from running Dungeon Tracer as a paid mobile game from 2024 to 2026.
After more than two years of updates, paid sales were still trending downward. Discounts and press coverage created short-lived spikes, but none became a sustainable baseline. I am now running a one-month free + optional IAP test on iOS to see whether it can support continued development. The experiment is ongoing, and the results are not yet conclusive.
Current status: one-month iOS free + optional IAP experiment in progress
Launch price: $2.99Later price: $0.99Historical data audited through September 2026
01 · TL;DR
The numbers first
Paid-game volume9,007 iOS purchases
Plus 6,963 Android charge rows. These are platform-specific transaction measures, not combined unique buyers.
Developer proceeds$12,535.86 iOS
Plus approximately $8,500.04 Android, converted at KRW 1,380 per USD. Periods and accounting bases differ, so I do not combine them.
$2.99 → $0.99More units, mixed economics
Some windows rose sharply, but volume gains were not proportional to proceeds and did not establish a permanent baseline.
Media and country mixA major confounder
Launch press, direct outreach, localization, and regional chart exposure overlapped with price changes.
Retention effectNot identifiable
The activity data is not joined to each player's purchase price. The available cohorts cannot isolate a price effect.
What I am testing nowiOS free + $9.99 IAP
The one-month experiment is ongoing. Results are not yet conclusive; Android remains paid.
Correction to my earlier claim: I previously used a server last_login field for retention. That field was also updated by account changes such as game saves, so it was not valid evidence of actual D7 or D30 activity. The retention figures here use GA4 activity on the exact Nth day.

02 · Context matters
Price changes did not happen in a vacuum
What happened
July 2024 · Launch coverageTouchArcade included Dungeon Tracer in its new-release roundup and then selected it as game of the week. Pocket Gamer also covered the launch. The rise began before the weekly selection, so launch interest and consecutive coverage are overlapping factors, not the measured effect of one article.
August 2024 · #1 paid puzzle game in JapanA developer post from August 22 records Dungeon Tracer at #1 in the Japanese App Store's paid puzzle category at ¥100. The first discount, Japanese-language coverage, and interest from Dungeon Raid fans all overlapped. This was a category ranking, not #1 across all paid apps.
June–July 2026 · Direct PR and #1 in TaiwanI emailed Taiwanese outlets individually. Bahamut GNN published a Traditional Chinese article on June 16, which was republished or summarized elsewhere. Archived rank checks show #1 paid puzzle on June 17, July 1, and July 3. In the first 30 days from June 16, Taiwan represented 64.6% of global iOS net units.
Data
| Date / window | iOS purchases | Net sales | Developer proceeds |
| July 17, before the articles | 24 | $69.14 | $55.28 |
| July 18, new-release coverage | 81 | $245.04 | $198.19 |
| July 19, Game of the Week | 130 | $391.04 | $318.83 |
| July 20 | 150 | $446.76 | $362.16 |
| Four-day average, July 14–17 | — | $52.98/day | $43.22/day |
| Four-day average, July 20–23 | — | $263.50/day | $213.63/day |
The selected before-and-after sales average was 4.97 times higher. This is a descriptive comparison, not an estimate of the revenue caused by TouchArcade. The release itself and several articles occurred in the same period, and no referral-to-purchase data exists.
What I learned
Press and price cannot be separated here. Local-language coverage created a discovery path, localization reduced friction, and lower regional pricing may have reduced the commitment. The records support the combined pathway, but they do not isolate the contribution of one article or the price.
03 · Country mix
The same nominal discount reached different markets
What happened
The fall event was dominated by South Korea. The first 30 days after the June 2026 reference date were dominated by Taiwan, where direct outreach and local coverage occurred at the same time.
Data
| Window | Country | Net units | Unit share | Net sales | Sales share |
| Fall event | South Korea | 220 | 84.3% | $185.58 | 80.4% |
| Fall event | United States | 17 | 6.5% | $18.83 | 8.2% |
| Fall event | Japan | 9 | 3.4% | $11.46 | 5.0% |
| First 30 days after June 16 | Taiwan | 666 | 64.6% | $633.35 | 67.8% |
| First 30 days after June 16 | South Korea | 225 | 21.8% | $163.45 | 17.5% |
| First 30 days after June 16 | United States | 60 | 5.8% | $59.40 | 6.4% |
What I learned
Country mix changes the proceeds per sale through local prices, taxes, exchange rates, and platform exposure. It also reveals that these were not repeatable, market-neutral price tests. I cannot use either window to calculate a universal price elasticity or the number of sales required to reach a chart position.
04 · Store records
Results since launch, without combining incompatible currencies
Data
| Metric | iOS | Android |
| Coverage | Jul 2024–Sep 2026* | Jul 2024–Aug 2026 |
| Purchases / charge rows | 9,007 units | 6,963 rows |
| Refunds / refund rows | 242 units | 777 rows |
| Simple purchase-minus-refund count | 8,765 units | 6,186 rows |
| Net customer sales | $15,161.43 | Approx. $10,002.30 |
| Developer proceeds | $12,535.86 | Approx. $8,500.04 |
| Basis | Apple Analytics, estimated USD | Google earnings ledger, converted at KRW 1,380/USD |
*The iOS total is the sum of observed purchase rows and includes dates with no available row; missing dates were not filled with zero. Android counts transaction rows, not unique buyers. A purchase-minus-refund count is neither a unique-buyer count nor a final cohort refund rate. The two platforms use different currencies, cut-offs, time zones, and accounting definitions, so their amounts are intentionally not added together.
Apple financial reports, converted at the fixed reference rate of KRW 1,380 per USD, total approximately $15,137.68 in net customer sales and $12,528.99 in developer proceeds for accounting periods from June 30, 2024 through August 29, 2026. Those conversions are context, not actual bank receipts. A manually entered Steam gross figure was excluded because the settlement export and period allocation were not verified.
What I learned
Units, gross customer payments, estimated analytics proceeds, financial statements, and bank receipts answer different questions. Treating them as one “revenue” number hid important differences, so the audited version keeps each source and currency separate.
05 · iOS case studies
Big unit gains, smaller and short-lived proceeds gains
What happened
Fall 2025 event
| Window | Observed days | Net units | Net sales | Developer proceeds |
| Previous 28 days | 26 / 28 | 52 | $166.08 | $135.52 |
| Event, Sep 29–Oct 6 | 8 / 8 | 261 | $230.85 | $196.20 |
| Following 28 days | 26 / 28 | 89 | $289.25 | $236.87 |
The event concentrated purchases, but the comparison windows each have two missing purchase-report days. The event's 261 net units came from 268 purchases minus seven refund units. Refunds are assigned to their report event date and do not necessarily belong to purchases made in the same window.
June 2026 reference-date comparison
| Window | Net units | Net sales | Developer proceeds |
| 30 days before June 16 | 276 | $427.77 | $344.88 |
| Days 1–30 after June 16 | 1,031 | $934.69 | $759.09 |
| Days 31–60 | 120 | $112.15 | $89.94 |
| Days 61–90 | 114 | $112.86 | $88.60 |
What I learned
The first 30 days were not a new baseline. The initial spike faded sharply even while the lower base price remained. June 16 is an operational comparison date, not a proven moment at which price alone changed; transaction records show mixed prices around the transition.
As a simple illustration, cutting a US list price from $2.99 to $0.99 requires about 3.02× as many sales to hold revenue constant if taxes, commission rate, refunds, and country mix are all unchanged. In reality, those assumptions did not hold.
06 · Android case study
The answer changed with the comparison window
Data
| KST window | Charge rows | Refund rows | Net customer sales | Developer proceeds |
| 30 days before June 16 | 254 | 17 | Approx. $247.91 | Approx. $211.14 |
| 30 days after June 16 | 250 | 12 | Approx. $257.61 | Approx. $218.13 |
| 60 days before June 16 | 361 | 24 | Approx. $406.44 | Approx. $345.90 |
| 60 days after June 16 | 435 | 16 | Approx. $445.15 | Approx. $377.58 |
Over 60 days, charge rows increased 20.5% and developer proceeds increased 9.2%. Over 30 days, charge rows fell 1.6% while proceeds increased 3.3%. The pre-period was not a clean full-price control: US transactions included $2.99, $0.49, and $0.99 prices.
Across all 15 recorded Google Play promotions
Transactions per day15 / 15 up
Every promotion had more daily charge rows than its equal-length preceding window.
Proceeds per day13 up, 2 down
More transactions did not guarantee more developer proceeds.
Largest observed proceeds ratio9.36×
For the event beginning April 25, 2025; descriptive, not an average elasticity or forecast.
What I learned
The choice of 30 or 60 days changed the answer, and the earlier periods already contained promotions. This is useful operational evidence, but it is not a clean full-price control versus a discounted treatment.
07 · Retention
Acquisition grew. Exact-day return rates were mixed.
Data
The comparison uses two 28-day first-visit cohorts: May 19–June 15 and June 16–July 13, 2026, in UTC+9. Both had completed their D30 observation window.
| Platform / cohort | Users | D1 | D7 | D30 | D30 users |
| iOS · before | 356 | 48.03% | 12.36% | 2.81% | 10 |
| iOS · after | 1,180 | 53.39% | 14.75% | 2.46% | 29 |
| Android · before | 300 | 42.33% | 8.00% | 3.33% | 10 |
| Android · after | 419 | 32.46% | 10.02% | 2.63% | 11 |
On iOS, D1 and D7 rose while D30 fell; the larger cohort still produced 29 exact-day D30 returners versus 10. On Android, D1 fell, D7 rose, and D30 fell slightly. D30 counts were only 10–29 users per group, and the 95% Wilson intervals overlap.
What I learned
This does not measure retention by purchase price. GA4 first-visit cohorts are not joined to individual purchase prices, and country, source, game version, and other promotions also changed. An exact-day D30 user is not the same as a user retained continuously for 30 days.

Daily sales around the launch coverage
What happened
Launch coverage appeared on July 18 and 19, 2024. The table below keeps every day in the audited July 14–23 window, rather than showing only the peak.

| 2024-07-21 | — | 111 | $332.18 | $270.07 | 38 | Approx. $75.90 |
| 2024-07-22 | — | 65 | $191.56 | $154.45 | 49 | Approx. $79.37 |
| 2024-07-23 | — | 29 | $83.50 | $67.82 | 81 | Approx. $160.87 |
iOS uses Apple event dates in UTC. Android uses transaction dates converted to KST. Purchases and charge rows are before refund-count subtraction; sales and proceeds include refund amounts. The publication timestamps and store-report days are not perfectly aligned.
What I learned
The four-day iOS net-sales average was $52.98 before the articles (July 14–17) and $263.50 after them (July 20–23), a descriptive ratio of 4.97×. This is not a causal estimate for TouchArcade. The launch, several articles, organic discovery, and existing interest in Dungeon Raid overlapped.
Detailed record · Japan
Japan: first discount, local coverage, and a #1 category rank
What happened
A public post by the developer dated August 22, 2024 records Dungeon Tracer at #1 in the Japanese App Store paid puzzle category, with a displayed price of ¥100. This is a category rank, not #1 across all paid games or all paid apps.
Evidence and timing
| Date | Evidence | What it establishes |
|---|
| 2024-07-27 | AppGet review | Japanese coverage of the puzzle, progression, and strategy systems. |
| 2024-08-02 | AppGet weekly roundup | The game was listed #1 by page views and #5 by downloads within that publication for July 26–August 1. This is not an App Store rank. |
| 2024-08 | AppHookup sale post | The first iOS discount was presented as $2.99 to $0.99; comments included interest from Dungeon Raid players. |
| 2024-08-17 | Japanese user review indexed by APPLION | Qualitative evidence that the Dungeon Raid connection mattered to at least one Japanese user. |
| 2024-08-20 | APPLION paid-new-app listing | A Japanese discovery path two days before the recorded #1 result. |
| 2024-08-22 | Developer post and chart image | #1 paid puzzle and ¥100 shown in the supplied image. |
What I learned
The plausible explanation is a combination of the first discount, local-language discovery, and demand from players looking for a Dungeon Raid-like game. The records do not identify which source converted each buyer, the sales count required for #1, the exact time the price changed, or how long the rank was held.

2026-07-14 to 2026-07-27 | 1/14 | 3 / 0 | 3 | $2.82 | 58 |
From June 16 through July 15, Taiwan produced 666 observed net units and $633.35 in net sales. That was 64.6% of worldwide iOS net units and 67.8% of worldwide iOS net sales in the same 30-day window.
What I learned
This was not a price-only success story. Direct outreach, Traditional Chinese support, local reporting, store links, a low local price, and possible chart discovery all overlapped. Article clicks and purchases are not joined, so the contribution of the press and the contribution of price cannot be separated.

Observed iOS prices since launch
These are observed transaction-price runs, not a reconstructed promotion calendar. Apple Analytics uses UTC dates; Sales Summary uses US Pacific dates. The same date label therefore refers to different 24-hour periods. Missing observations are not filled from adjacent prices.

Apple fiscal-period labels are not treated as calendar months. Analytics estimates, financial reports, and bank receipts have different timing, exchange-rate, tax, and settlement rules. Steam's manually entered gross amount was excluded because the settlement export and period allocation were not verified.
08 · Limits of the premium model
Lower prices coincided with more discovery, but did not solve the long-term problem
What happened
Dungeon Tracer launched at $2.99 and later moved to $0.99. Short promotions and media exposure produced strong bursts of paid acquisition, but the bursts faded. The first 30 days after the June 2026 reference date produced 1,031 iOS net units; the next two 30-day windows produced 120 and 114 observed net units.
Data
- At unchanged taxes, fees, refunds, and country mix, a move from $2.99 to $0.99 needs about 3.02 times as many sales to preserve revenue. The real country mix changed, so this is only an illustration.
- All 15 recorded Google Play promotions increased charge rows per day, but two reduced developer proceeds per day.
- The strongest acquisition periods overlapped with press, regional outreach, localization, launch interest, or sale-tracking exposure. Those conditions were not always repeatable.
- The available data cannot identify whether the lower price itself improved retention.
What I learned
The historical pattern is consistent with the upfront payment being one source of friction, but it does not isolate price from press and store exposure. Lower prices coincided with bursts of demand, while proceeds per sale fell and discovery did not stay at the initial peak. The paid model was still generating revenue; the question was whether a free entry point plus one optional purchase could fund continued updates more consistently. That question required a separate experiment rather than another before-and-after comparison.
09 · What I am testing now
One month of free iOS access with one optional $9.99 purchase
Currently testing. The iOS experiment began on September 22, 2026. The planned analysis window is September 23 through October 20. The experiment is still ongoing, and the results are not yet conclusive.
What changed
After operating for more than two years without in-app purchases, I changed the iOS app from paid to free for one month and introduced the game's first IAP. Android remains a paid app.
| Item | Current test condition |
| iOS upfront price | Free for the one-month experiment |
| IAP | $9.99 “Unlock All Classes” |
| What the IAP does | Unlocks every class immediately at level 10 |
| Required to play or progress? | No |
| Without paying | Every class can still be unlocked and developed through normal gameplay |
| Android | Remains paid |
What the experiment is designed to measure
- How much new-player acquisition changes when the upfront price is removed.
- Whether enough free players choose the optional IAP to support the cost of ongoing updates.
The experiment tracks App Store first downloads, GA4 new users and mature activity cohorts, newly created server identities, verified first class unlocks, refunds, and developer proceeds as separate measures. Downloads, players, server identities, and buyers are not treated as the same population.
Why iOS first
Google Play allows a paid app to become free, but does not allow that same app to return from free to paid. I kept Android paid so that the test would remain reversible. iOS is therefore the first platform used to test the free-entry model.
What I can conclude today
Nothing yet about whether the new model is better. The test needs the full observation window, verified IAP proceeds and refunds, and mature retention cohorts. Early downloads or a few purchases would not be enough to establish sustainable revenue.

What I would measure and do next time
Separate the scorecardsTrack unit volume, customer sales, developer proceeds, return rate, and number of returners separately. One number cannot stand in for the others.
Instrument PR linksUse distinct App Store campaign links per outlet and record publication time, original reporting, and republication separately. Small samples may still be hidden by privacy thresholds.
Use mature cohortsCompare equal observation windows only after D30 has matured, while recording version, errors, country mix, and acquisition source.
Launch coverage, direct Taiwanese outreach, short promotions, and a longer-term base-price change created different conditions. My practical takeaway is to create a reason to talk about the game, communicate it to the right local audience, improve the post-purchase experience, and measure proceeds and return behavior at each step. A category #1 or a large sales spike is meaningful, but it is not recurring monthly revenue.
11 · Methods and limitations
How the figures were audited
- For App Store Purchases DAILY files, the latest processed revision for each event date was selected. Weekly, monthly, annual, and older revised files were not double-counted.
- iOS days without a purchase row are marked unknown, not zero. Android days within collected settlement months with no matching transaction are counted as zero.
- Apple Analytics dates (UTC) and Sales Summary dates (US Pacific Time) remain separate. Transaction prices do not prove the exact configured start or end time of a promotion.
- Google transaction timestamps were converted from PST/PDT to UTC+9 before window comparisons. Legacy and current product-identifier columns were both included back to the July 2024 launch.
- Sales, refunds, and proceeds retain their source definitions. Store-estimated analytics, financial statements, and bank receipts are not treated as interchangeable.
- No order IDs, customer identifiers, or individual activity records are published here.
These are observational before-and-after comparisons, not randomized experiments. Trends, updates, press, country mix, other promotions, measurement consent, and delayed corrections can confound the results. I do not claim a causal price effect where the data cannot identify one.

This public English edition condenses the full Korean audit into a shareable case study while preserving the principal figures, corrections, and caveats. Source snapshots have different cut-off dates; the historical report is a fixed record and may be corrected if store reports are revised. The current experiment is documented separately because it began after the historical report's main data cut-off.
Next update: I will update this report when the one-month iOS experiment is complete and its sales, IAP, refund, and cohort data have matured.
